Turn Down For What

I find this song & video enjoyable; quite baffling.

There are such few words – and I don’t even really know what they are implying. Turn down for what? Turn down for what. Is that a question or a statement? What I’ve figured out though is that it just doesn’t matter; you can’t over think it or the song loses it’s shimmer.

This song…It really goes against all of my Little John (Lil?…yeah, I don’t know…) hatred I’ve mustered up over the years.

WHHAAATTT?! … OOOOOOOOKAAAY!!

I hate that. I hate to say hate…but when the shoe fits…

Possibly, I’ve had it wrong this entire time. Maybe it’s not his voice I’ve had a distaste for, but the words? He doesn’t grace us with that obnoxiousness in this song.

The more I think about it… it is his voice. The amazing catchy i-wanna-move-my-body-in-ways-it-shouldn’t-move beat just make up for it in this one particular song.

As far as the video goes…I am successfully able to spot the funny, fabulous choreography of it & I feel comfortable handing majority of the credit for that to my many years of watching So You Think You Can Dance.  I believe if that particular music video was put on the SYTYCD stage – Adam Shankman would hardly be able to contain himself; who could blame him?

Like…these people practiced this. Can you imagine how much fun they had?

With all that being said… after jumping past the sureness that I hate all things “Small John” (that’s what I’ve decided to call him going forward ’cause the whole ‘lil/little’ thing bothers me) and then leaping over the denial I was swimming in the first 10 times I heard Turn Down For What…

…I just can’t stop wanting to dance when I hear it. It does the same thing to me no matter my whereabouts. My car, office, house, waiting room (I highly doubt that’ll ever happen though).

I don’t know who I am anymore. Are there more Small John songs I might like?

So many questions…

  1. I’ve heard the song before and didn’t think much of it. But that video…wow WTH? I have no words. Well Small John has no words. I don’t think Lil John had much to do with how good it was. It was almost all the DJ Snake don’t you think? You could substitute a 100 different people syaing Turn Down for what and it would work.

    1. You make a very valid point, Sir. DJ Snake was like, “Hey Small John…Can we get you in a studio & have you record 4 words that we’ll use for this song?”
I wonder what DJ Snake is all about…
& Yeah…That video makes my head spin in all the right ways. I want to go as far as to call it genius – but…that seems a bit overzealous…but, that’s how much I like it.

      1. I was pretty shocked with the video at first, but after seeing 4 more times, I guess you could say it is pretty awesome.

I wonder if DJ Snake loved Snakes on a Plane so much that he took the name for his own. It had to be something like that.

      2. Yessssssssssssss!

I will leave you with my favorite Al Franken Quote:

“Mistakes are a part of being human. Precious life lessons that can only be learned the hard way. Unless it’s a fatal mistake, which, at least, others can learn from.”

  2. I’ve never been a fan of Lil John either, but then I saw him on The Apprentice, and it was nice to see a different side of him.
    Whaaaat?
Though I’ve only head this song a couple of times, I agree it has undeniable dancability. I haven’t seen the video before, so thanks for posting it- I’m excited to watch it later (not at the office)!
    Okaaaay…
As far as his name goes, I wouldn’t get too caught up on that. It might change someday. Look at Snoop Lion! Maybe there will be a Big Jon in the future. Then he could be a spokesperson for Big John Steak and Onion (which upon googling, I’ve found is only an urban Michigan chain). But still, there are opportunities to be had….
    Yeeeeeah….

    1. Hahahaha! I literally read this entire comment out loud to Brandin… and I did my best with the WHHAAAT & OKAAAAAY & YEEEEEAH – and he also thought it was pretty hilarious. Please tell me you have watched the video since! It’s pretty outlandishly awesome. I have never head of Big John Steak & Onion………but I love onions with my steak – so I bet it’s wonderful.

      1. Teehee- I’m glad you guys got a kick out of it. I honestly thought it was too corny and would leave you scratching your head and wondering what the heck I was smoking when I typed that. So, I appreciate the reassurance! lol I watched the video when I got home that day, and it’s definitely ridiculous and entertaining! Honestly, I thought, “Man, if I were doing those moves, I’d be a panting mess.” Definitely takes some skill and stamina to do all that!

  3. I know what to turn down for!

I swear the people in this video were my old neighbors…. And I wish they would have “turned down” for lots of things! Common decency, the peace and quiet of the neighborhood, my sleeping toddler, the nice elderly couple who’s fence backed up to theirs…that poor old lady had to water her petunias to gangster rap blasting all fricken day long. I could go on, but I won’t, but I will promise to keep my blasting gangster rap to the confines of my car, and continue to “turn down” for stop lights. Haha.

    1. Aaahhhahahaha – you’re hilarious! Those are all stellar reasons to turn down for…& I am also guilty of the turning down at stop lights. I’d hate for people to have to figure out if that “noise” is really coming from that white girl in the Malibu.
